Graduate supervision | Tutelle If you are interested in pursuing research into a topic relating to my areas of interest (music semiotics, music analysis, music and the moving image, popular music etc.), and if you wish to contact me for consultation or about supervision, it is best, before you send any written proposal, if we can discuss your ideas either in person or over the phone (in English, ou en français, eller på svenska, oppure in italiano, oder auf Deutsch). If you are interested, please contact me first of all, letting me know at which phone number you can be reached at what time of the day. If you are thinking about registering as a postgraduate student at the institution that currently employs me (Faculté de musique à lUniversité de Montréal), please follow the instructions, provided below, which will lead you to essential information about doing postgraduate studies here. However, please note that I will almost certainly retire from full-time university employment in the summer of 2009 and return to Europe. I still do not know with which university, if any, I will be associated part-time in which capacity. I will update this information when I have it myself! Dispensation to present a postgraduate dissertation in a language other than French (usually English) at the Université de Montréal is, if applied for and duly motivated, generally granted during the process of admission to the Facultés doctoral programme. However, please note that M.A. and Ph.D. programmes here involve obligatory taught courses in French (see Scolarité under the Règlement pédagogique on the universitys website. It may also be possible under certain circumstances to negotiate some sort of co-supervision (cotutelle) if you are registered at another university, in which case you are subject to the rules of that university, as well of any agreement (if such a document exists) regulating co-supervision between that university and the Université de Montréal, rather than to those of the Université de Montréal as such. Moreover, I may be able, depending on the workload involved in my primary responsabilities to the Université de Montréal and on the importance of your project, to co-supervise, as a private person, doctoral students registered solely at another institution. If you want to know more about co-supervision agreements at the Université de Montréal, visit this site and enter cotutelle convention in the Search box (top right under Recherche avancée). |

Short courses, seminars and workshops I am available to give a limited number of short courses, seminars or workshops in addition to my duties at the Université de Montréal. I am usually available for such work between the very end of May and mid-to-late late August, but it may also be possible to arrange a few days in mid-to-late October or around Easter. Up till now, the most frequent request has been that I run a three- to five-day workshop in popular music analysis for a group of between seven and seventeen participants. These workshops follow the general form given for the courses Popular Music Analysis and Analyse de la musique populaire. Teaching can be in English, French or Swedish, and discussions can be held in any of those three languages, or, with local help, in Danish, Dutch, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese or Spanish. I have previously run such workshops for the: Cursos latinoamericanos de música contemporânea (Brazil, 1984); Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Brisbane/Gold Coast (Australia, 1997 and 1999); Diplomado Internacional de la Semiologia Musical, Escuela Nacional de Musica, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México (1998); Department of Music, University of Hong Kong (2003); Dipartimento de musicologia, Università di Padua (Italy, 2003), the University of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio, June 2004) and the University of Montevideo (Uruguay, July 2004). |

Liverpool courses Details of courses I used to teach at the University of Liverpool are no longer on line, except for Popular Music Analysis. However, most course materials and all student work from my Liverpool days (1991-2002) are still accessible from this site.
